Big Ten Basketball Program Rankings

Third Eye Blind's Out of the Vein is an underrated album.

Dunkeroos were the ultimate lunchtime cafeteria dessert for tweens in the 1990's.

Adding baking soda to toothpaste presents no benefit for your teeth.

The Big Ten Network's Tim Doyle is the worst studio analyst I've ever heard (apologies to NBA TV's Eric Snow).

Guylyn, Remmenga, Cummins of 501 West Broadway in San Diego is one of the top First Amendment law firms in America.

The Big Ten will win the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at least six times in the next decade.

Most of the Big Ten's basketball programs are on the rise. They've amassed nearly as much coaching talent as the SEC has for football and a handful of teams have unbelievable recruiting classes already committed for 2010. And Indiana has stopped cheating.

What follows is a ranking of how well-positioned the Big Ten's basketball programs are today and beyond:

1) Ohio State - Thanks to Greg Oden, THE Ohio State University is now THE destination for the nation's best young big men. Kosta Koufus was a disappointment and BJ Mullens is struggling, but they've already got three of the top 20 players (DeShaun Thomas, Jared Sullinger, and Jordan Sibert) in the country committed for 2010. Thad Matta has made Ohio State hot and it doesn't look like things will be changing anytime soon. The Buckeyes will be a threat to win the National Championship until Matta bolts. Of course, he'll never need to because the Buckeyes have the richest athletic department in the NCAA.

2) Illinois - If Illini fans had their wish a year and a half ago, non-nude model Bruce Weber would be looking for work. Lucky for them, he's still got the job and has Illinois poised to move back to the top of the polls. Their 2009 class is really nice with four-stars Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson and three-stars Tyler Griffey and Joseph Bertrand (who each had a slew of major offers). 2010 is scary for the rest of the league with five-stars Crandall Head and Jereme Richmond and four-star center Meyers Leonard. They'll be back in the Final Four soon. Of course, they would've been back sooner had Weber, then an assistant under Gene Keady at Purdue, followed through on the interest he showed in me as a 10-year old when he called me a "great shooter." Yeah, I was pretty good.

3) Michigan State - Their 2009 and 2010 classes aren't bad, but they aren't special either (example: Fort Wayne wing commit Russell Byrd wasn't even offered by Purdue). They've been so good for so long that it's hard to put them lower than number three. But the Spartans could be primed for a fall in what looks to be a vastly improved Big Ten over the next few years, unless a great 2008-09 season restores the program's reputation nationally.

4) Purdue - For a spell, the Boilermakers looked a threat to become the next Duke. Had they landed Tyler Zeller (or Jeff Teague or Matt Howard for that matter), they'd be well on their way; instead, they had to settle for John Hart, Scott Martin transferred, and this season has been a bit of a mess. Their 2009 commits are uninspiring, but a three-man 2010 class has hopes up in West Lafayette. The current sophomore trio has to make a run deep in the tournament before they're done, or Purdue will miss yet another opportunity to finally ascend among the nation's elite with regularity. Probably the latter; this is Purdue after all. Sigh...

5) Indiana - A six-man 2009 group combined with the competence of Antarctic explorer Tom Crean will restore the Hoosiers to respectability immediately. Looking further ahead, 2011 point guard Matt Carlino will be fun to watch. Indiana really needs time to recover from a volatile last ten years. From never knowing when Bob Knight's reign would come to a fiery end, to always wondering when Mike Davis would finally be pushed out, and then becoming even more of a laughingstock after hiring known cheater Kelvin Sampson, they've finally got it right in Bloomington. Crean will have them challenging for conference titles in no time.

6) Wisconsin - The Badgers have a remarkably personable, colorful coach, which makes the bland, bald, white guy culture in Madison all the more puzzling. Where do they keep finding all these lookalikes? Is cloning legal in Wisconsin? If it ever was it must still be, because they've got two new cult members on the way in Mike Bruesewitz and Evan Anderson. Diamond Taylor and Vander Blue will balance out the boring with funky names and real athletic ability. On the whole, Wisconsin will probably keep being Wisconsin... ranked near the bottom of the top-25, making shocking runs in March, and keeping scores in the 50's.

7) Minnesota - It's a testament to how deep the league will be more than an indictment that Tubby Smith is doing something wrong in Minnesota that they're ranked this low. They've been a revelation this year and will probably make the NCAA Tournament. They'll add potential superstars Royce White and Rodney Williams next year to a nice core. In reality, they'll be outstanding for the next few seasons. But longer term, Tubby Smith is almost 60 and could struggle to keep top recruits suiting up for the Golden Gophers.

8) Michigan - John Beilein has the right idea placing an emphasis on recruits in the state of Indiana. He's got two key freshmen from the Hoosier State in Zack Novak and Stu Douglass and is already hot for 2011 prospect Mitch McGary. Beilein is a great coach who put West Virginia on the map behind lightly regarded- yet super fashionable- Kevin Pittsnogle and Mike Gansey. He's hinting at doing the same with Michigan already; I'll probably look foolish in five years for putting the Wolverines this low.

9) Iowa - Todd Lickliter was fantastic at Butler and has the right mentality to succeed at Iowa. Unfortunately, their current talent level lags behind the rest of the league, and it will be a tall order for him to level the playing field for the Hawkeyes. He'll have to do more with less, just like he did while posting gaudy records with the Bulldogs. Give Lickliter a few years to develop his current group. Jake Kelly is much better this year, and Matt Gatens and Anthony Tucker provide hope for the future. Lickliter has yet to nab a four-star, but a mature, experienced guard-heavy line-up could surprise the Big Ten in a few years.

10) Penn State - The current squad at Penn State may be as good as it gets in Happy Valley. The superb play of Talor Battle and Stanley Pringle is a testament to Ed DeChellis's eye for talent. But he'll have to get lucky to ever get the Nittany Lions into the NCAA Tournament.

11) Northwestern - Nothing against Bill Carmody, but why do analysts constantly praise him as the perfect coach for Northwestern? They've yet to be a threat to even be decent with him, and he'll never recruit well enough to move them up the standings. You can't win in the Big Ten if Tim Doyle, Kevin Coble, and Craig Moore are your stars. You probably couldn't win in the MAC either. It's easy to think that Northwestern will never be good, but it's possible. They need to take a risk with their next hire (How long is Carmody going to be given a free pass, anyways?). They should either go after the head coach of a Division II national champion (someone who's proven to be a good talent evaluator) or hire a top AAU coach who has the connections to bring talent. A third option might be to hire a European coach who can attract foreign studs to Evanston for an education and exposure to NBA scouts. None will guarantee success, but they'd be interesting to watch. Until then, they'll continue to be the conference doormat.

Pretty fair rankings though you might move Minnesota and Michigan up and Indiana down until the HOosiers do something again.

You're kidding, right? The Gophers as number 7? That ridiculous!

Tubby will easily be coaching the Gophers for the next 10 years (and our AD will no doubt ensure that he's properly compensated). And that's not even taking into consideration the dramatically increasing talent that coming from the state. With Tubby locking down the Minnesota borders, from a recruiting standpoint, the MN hoops program will regain its prestige and continue to be a force in the Big Ten for MANY more years.

Who do you put them over? You can't just look at your own team's situation. It's pretty hard to move them up.

At January 14, 2009 5:54 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Put the Gophers over Wisconsin (you will see that happen sooner rather than later), Indiana (getting recruits is easy at Indiana, winning again may not be), and Purdue--the next Duke? Seriously? Just a year ago no one picked them to be anything. They overachieved last year and now they are the next Duke? C'mon!

Even if the prognostication is right and Tubby does leave or retire soon, you are forgetting about our ace in the hole. Flip Saunders will come back home.

Like Billynho said, not everyone is a Minnestoa fan. Wisconsin is always good, Indiana is a powerhouse in waiting, and Purdue? Purdue is the best team in the Big Ten right now and still has a young team. Minnesota might miss the tournament this year.

Flip Saunders? HA. I'd put Michigan over Minnesota too.

Worst list ever.

Purdue didn't have room for Matt Howard or Jeff Teague in its 2007 recruiting class. It's not a situation where they missed on them. Believe me, Purdue fans are not pleased Martin potentially took the place of Matt Howard.

The recruitment of Zeller was a big disappointment and was really bizarre towards the end. It looked like Purdue was in the lead until the last week when he suddenly became a different person other than the humble, soft spoken high school kid from Washington, IN.

You will be surprised when Hart turns into a solid role player for Purdue over the next 4 years.

I can't argue with #4.

I'm guessing you're upset about where MSU is?

Michigan State is good, but haven't been an elite program nationally since their Final Four run. The Big Ten is down so they've looked good. Ohio State and Illinois look poised to be two of the top 5-10 programs in the country. Purdue will be going after the same guys Michigan State wants (and they've already started getting more top in-state Indiana prospects that State used to like), and have enough talent committed looking ahead that they'll likely be ranked top-25 in the country every year for the next 5 years. Indiana has the potential to be a top-10 program. Wisconsin has arguably been better than Michigan State since Bo Ryan took over.

All that means Michigan State should feel relieved when they're one of the top three teams in the conference, and third on this list might be generous.

Worst. List. Ever.

Indiana is one of the most respected programs in college basketball. I have no clue as to why they are so far down the list. Tom Crean will have them back in no time.

MSU has been down the past couple years but it looks like the B10 will be theirs again. Strange that they're at #3.

tOSU and Illinois have both had a good run from a single recruiting class. 1 recruiting class doesn't make or break a program. OSU made the NIT last year... Illinois didn't even make it to the NIT, they had a losing record. LOL

Wisconsin at 6? What? You mean the same Wisconsin under Bo Ryan who have ran through the B10 over and over again? Right...

This is the worst listing I've ever read about the B10. Pathetic. Next time, sober up before posting in your blog.

Billynho, can you remind me which Big Ten team IS in the top 5-10 right now? Thanks, now you can continue your speculation based on recruiting (Thad Matta sure has done a lot with all his "talent" in the last couple of seasons).

I know I'm an MSU fan but to hand Ill a Final Four and declare MSU headed down based almost solely on these upcoming recruiting classes is a little dubious.

MSU didn't make it to the 2005 Final Four on star rankings. Sure, there was great talent but it didn't stop there.
Besides, with our sophomores, Roe, Appling, Green, Nix, Sherman, and others I'm not fretting yet.
Besides, I'll go to battle with Izzo as my coach any day.

At January 20, 2009 12:32 PM , Anonymous Dave said...

None of the current Big Ten coaches have led their current school to an NCAA championship besides Izzo.

Every Michigan State Spartan sho stays four years has made the Final Four under Izzo.

MSU has 4 Final Fours in the last 9 years and has a good shot to make it 5 out of the last 10 this year.

MSU is 5-0 in the Big Ten with a Top 3 RPI right now.

Let all of that sink in before you write about Big Ten basketball again.

MSU is #1. Will be #1 for some time.

hey spartans fans, your team IS going down. Every big 10 team has a good coach now. Trouble is MSU might have only the fifth or sixth most talent in a few years. Enjoy the bottom half of the big 10!

Sorry Chief,

With a 5-0 start in the Big Ten. A #3 ranking in the RPI, and a senior class of Gray (underachieved), Walton (not exactly torching the nets), Ibok (enough said) and Suton (solid post player). You should probably edit that last post.

I would say that Suton will be the hardest to replace of that class, but with 2 Top 100 big men coming in... I think we'll be just fine.

first of all you can put msu anywhere you want, they still are the program to beat.... is this a list of incoming recruits ranking? or where the big ten will be in 2-3years? if its where the big 10 will be in a couple years, then your crazy, msu has a young team with 2 5 star recruits and and 4 four star recruits on the roster know that will be there in 2 years. on top of that d. nix is a star in the making, losing weight and gaining muscle. we are also going to sign 1 more recruit and that will be jamil wilson a steal from wisconsin. g. sherman is just size and i mean long, this years ibok! in 2010 we bring in nixs' teamate k. appling and a star in his own right. r. byrd is a 6-5 SG a white guy from indiana that shoots the lights out, bye the way his last name is bird, i think they'll take him! all indiana state needs is a guy from michigan that plays all poisitons named illusion! all these prospects are 4 star recruits and still are rising. you also have that little thing called tom izzo, who gets the absolute most out of %95 of his players ie. i.dahlman, wheres that guy at? shout out to tom crean, a good old izzo clone, and to u of minnesota, tubby will bring that program to respectability, same with bielin at mich. as much as i hate the wolv. basketball fans, where were you 2 or 3 years ago let alone last year? glad to see you back.

i'll well aware of what you've got and i saw the spartan forum. nice forum, i like it a lot, our j-claw piece was big on there, but i have to disagree on this issue... and as a few people have already mentioned in the thread... i clearly have some knowledge of what i'm talking about.

yes you guys have good players now. a few stars and solid recruits coming in. but you seem to think you're the only school with this.

ive followed garrick sherman and jamil wilsons recruitment very closely. i'm not overly impressed with either. that's just my opinion. you say all your recruits are rising too. you realize every school's fans feel that way right. i laugh everytime i read someone say it on purdues board too. appling may be good (never seen him), byrd i have and im not impressed. but hes from indiana, so he'll probably be good.

compare your incomings to purdue's. not a lot of difference. i'm not saying purdues are better (i did rank michigan state higher), but right now our 2010 commits are ranked higher and are thrashing in high school. and right now (you'll all hate this), theres little difference between purdue and mich states current roster. purdue has "stars" in hummel, e'twaun, and johnson. like you all, purdue fans think we could have 5 guys on the first two all big ten teams. i laugh at that, and i think you're going overboard talking about MSU's roster that way.

osu and illinois have extremely bright futures and great coaches. izzo is good too. but so are weber and matta. i think they'll have more talent too, and im not alone saying that.

as you all keep saying, time will tell. but realize im counting on michigan state remaining a team typically ranked anywhere from 5-20 every year (purdue too). i just think ohio state and illinois can challenge with the super-elites nationally based on their momentum.

as for wisconsin, IU, michigan, and minnesota... cmon! you have to move some down to move some up. who do you propose to move down?

that was my main point... the big ten will be stacked.

If you looked at OSU a few years ago, you might have said the same thing to. They had a great run with Oden who is a once in a lifetime recruit. He leaves and they miss the tourney and they are mediocre again. Quite frankly I expect a similar cycle to continue. MSU has for the most part been a consistent contender and always been there in March. They continue to bring in similar recruiting classes and it looks like they are going to win the BT this year.Illinois has been to one FF in 20 years and had a losing record.Honestly based on TI credentials, what makes you think he will fall off?

At June 9, 2009 12:55 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yep, this list sucks. Care to move MSU back to their rightful place at number one after yet another FF run? MSU is carries the banner for this conference and will stay that way untill at least Izzo leaves
